Hearing Tests

A complete hearing test should offer Otoscopy and Pure Tone Audiometry with Air-Conduction and Bone-Conduction testing. The full spectrum of frequencies should be tested allowing for the understanding of the patient's hearing ability and location of hearing loss in the auditory pathway. A free hearing test is usually just a screening and it will be a quick 5 or 10 minute test that you will simply pass or fail.

A paid hearing test is usually performed in a sound-treated room or booth and is carried out by a fully trained and experienced audiologist. Alternatively, a free hearing test can take place in a storefront, sound-treated room or booth and can be carried out by an audiologist, audiometrist, nurse, or hearing clinic receptionist.

Audiologists vs. Audiometrists

Both are hearing-care professionals, but their training and scope of practice differ. An audiologist has advanced clinical qualifications and specialises in the medical assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management of hearing and balance disorders. In contrast, an audiometrist focuses on non-medical hearing evaluations and has a more limited scope of practice. As a result, audiologists are the preferred choice for comprehensive, clinically robust hearing care.
